Grade 11 - Chapter 7 LOTF

Hello Grade 11's

Good work today. We read, discussed, and took notes on chapter 6 of the novel, and also watched a short video about Boys and Masculinity entitled "The Masks we Wear". This led to a discussion about "violence and respect" and how people can do aggressive/dangerous things to gain popularity and admiration from their peers.

We also reviewed the the different types of characters we encounter in fictional stories and took notes in preparation for our final exam.

Your homework for tomorrow is to read Chapter 7, select 4 quotes, and write a 2 sentence explanation for why you selected each quote.

Grade 11 - Lord of the Flies, Background and Context

Hello Grade 11's

Today we took notes and discussed the context for Lord of the Flies (author's bio, historical events, location)

We also did the "Abandoned" group activity to imagine what life on a stranded island would be like, and what decisions you would need to make. Thanks for all your excellent suggestions; hopefully you'll never need them!

We started reading chapter 1 and completing the assigned questions. This is your only homework for the long weekend.

1) Finished our paragrah response on the differences/similarities between Jonas's community and the community in Pleasantville.

2) Completed journal #1 (ways of managing conflict) and had class discussion on the topic

3) Read the article on Anger and Conflict (p 92 of Sightlines 8) and completed the question sheet

Homework is to finish these questions if you did not finish in class.

Grade 11 - Final Performances and Journal Entry #13

Hello grade 11's,

Great work on your 12 Angry performaces today. For a brief momeent I felt like I was in the courtroom. Riveting stuff.

After the performance we completed Entry #13 in our writing portfolio

Entry 13 - Juror #13

Write a juror bio as if you were a juror in the trial (same format as page 13/14 of the book)

Afterwards, write a paragraph starting with "If I were a juror in this trial, I would..."

Grade 10 - Finish short story and lead up assignments

Hello grade 10's, great work on your short story project today. Lots of creative ideas brewing.

Your homework for Tuesday is to finish the final copy of your short story and ensure all the "lead-up" assignments are complete and submitted:

1. Character Sketch
2. Setting and Mood
3. Dialogue and Rationale

On Tuesday we'll be working on the artistic portion, so all the writing/edits will need to be done by then. REMEMBER, you don't need to print the story off, as we'll be using the larger-sized Ledger/Tabloid paper and will be printing from the school computers.

Grade 10 - Short Story Homework

Hello grade 10's,

Your homework for next day is to finish your short story dialogue (10-15 lines) and rationale (5-6 sentences explaining the dialogue writing strategies you used)

You also need to start writing the draft for your short story, as many of you have already done. You will have a substitute teacher this Thursday and this block will be spent writing and revising your draft, as well as providing each other feedback.

I'll be meeting with each of you on Friday to check-in on your progress. Remember, your work this week and on Thursday with the subsitute will be a major part of your "Writing Process/Work Effort" grade.

Grade 11 - Catcher in the Rye Finale

Hello Grade 11's,

Congratulations on finishing your final test and the Catcher in the Rye unit. You provided lots of unique ideas and insight through this unit, and definitely made me think about the novel in different ways. Well done!
